Overview
A sheltered layout is central to keeping Saxatilia albopunctata. This aggressive pike cichlid can be housed alone or considered for a community of other large cichlids, with caves that allow it to withdraw from open areas.
Distribution & habitat
Its range crosses the Guianas, extending between the Demerara drainage in Guyana and the Approuague in French Guiana via Suriname. Forest pools and sluggish streams or tributaries provide sandy bottoms and shade from vegetation hanging over the water.
Aquarium setup
Start with a tank at least 120 cm long. Arrange rocks into retreats over a sand bed rather than relying on open swimming space alone. Some digging and rearrangement may occur. Choose sturdy plants and keep them in pots or attach them to wood.
Diet & feeding
Combine quality cichlid pellets or flakes with frozen or live invertebrates, including brine shrimp and bloodworms. Spirulina foods and algae wafers can supply plant material as part of this varied menu.
Behaviour & compatibility
Aggression is an important consideration when selecting tankmates. Other large cichlids are possible companions; a dedicated aquarium is another option.
Sexual dimorphism
Males tend to exceed females in size and show stronger coloration.
Breeding
Aquarium spawning has only rarely been reported.
