概述
Satanoperca jurupari

Overview
Usually peaceful outside breeding, Satanoperca jurupari needs fine sand, a spacious footprint, and consistently clean water. Identification remains complicated by look-alike fishes and uncertain boundaries between geographic populations.
Distribution & habitat
Broad records cover main channels, tributaries, and floodplain lakes across much of the Amazon basin, typically over sand or mud with leaves and submerged branches. Some historically assigned eastern and coastal populations differ genetically or morphologically, so not every old locality establishes the same species.
Aquarium setup
Fine soft sand is essential; coarse particles can obstruct feeding, injure gills, or be swallowed. Subdued light and wood provide structure. Although leaves occur naturally, repeatedly disturbed decaying litter can suspend debris and clog equipment.
Use a mature system with effective external or sump filtration and weekly changes of roughly 50–70%. Mechanical filtration should intercept particles before sand wears pump parts. Distribute returns to avoid excessive flow. Poor maintenance may accompany head and lateral-line erosion or impaired growth.
Diet & feeding
Members of the genus sift substrate but also rise for offered food once settled. Reported wild stomach contents include tiny animals, seeds, and detritus. Even large fish need small food items. Use fine prepared products and tiny live or frozen foods, including some plant-rich dry diets, divided into three or four daily portions.
Behaviour & compatibility
Groups of at least five to eight help fish settle and distribute hierarchy-related pressure. Small groups may remain nervous or focus aggression on subordinates. Choose peaceful companions with matching water needs, avoiding aggressive bottom-territory holders. Fish larger than a few millimeters are normally not prey, but keeping these cichlids with freshwater rays is not reliably safe.
Sexual dimorphism
Females tend to be slightly smaller and deeper-bodied when gravid, although dependable sexing remains difficult.
Breeding
Captive breeding is established through maternal mouthbrooding beginning at the egg stage. Raise juveniles to allow natural pairing and expect maturity to take a year, often two or more. Diet and rigorous stable maintenance matter more than a particular trigger.
Males establish territories around wood or other solid objects, sometimes defended jointly before spawning. The female immediately collects fertilized batches, potentially totaling several hundred eggs. Males occasionally collect eggs briefly but usually provide little continuing care and may expel the female afterward. Longer male care occurs in some cases rather than as a fixed strategy.
Free-swimming fry take powdered food, Artemia nauplii, and microworms. A separate space for brooding females can protect released young from community fish, including conspecifics.
Notes
Prominent white head spots or worm-like markings suggest a similar species rather than typical S. jurupari. Preserve locality records when breeding because some geographic identities remain unresolved.
