Overview
Rhynchodoras woodsi is an uncommon, shy, nocturnal thorny catfish with a conspicuous bony projection above the mouth. Peaceful though it is, competition with other bottom fishes can prevent adequate feeding.
Distribution & habitat
It appears restricted to Ecuador's Marañon basin, although that proposed endemism is not certain. Flowing rivers and tributaries provide root tangles and sunken logs used as shelter.
Aquarium setup
Accommodation around 90 × 38 × 30 cm can house a small group. Keep lighting subdued and provide pots, tubes, and tangled wood, the latter apparently being especially attractive. Plants are optional but shade the bottom and add cover. Some water movement is appreciated.
Diet & feeding
This omnivore accepts quality sinking pellets or tablets with live and frozen supplements such as bloodworms and small earthworms. Keeper observations suggest feeding may occur exclusively in darkness, so offer food after lights out and check that it actually eats.
Behaviour & compatibility
Placid small to medium fishes using other parts of the aquarium are possible companions. Avoid strong feeding competition from bottom dwellers. Conspecifics are usually tolerated, often sharing shelters by day; occasional jostling generally causes no physical harm.
Notes
Reliable sexing characters and captive breeding details remain unavailable. The purpose of the mouth projection is unresolved. Suggested functions include protecting delicate barbels or extracting invertebrates from woody crevices. These remain hypotheses and do not establish an exact natural diet.
