Overview
Blue spots on the head and body give Rhinogobius sp. 'CO' its pattern code. This unresolved Japanese goby includes populations differing in freshwater or brackish habitat use and larval development. Reliable origin information matters more than a uniform care rule attached to the code.
Distribution & habitat
Honshu, Japan, is a confirmed part of the range, but the full distribution is unclear.
It occupies small tributaries and streams over gravel, rocks, boulders, and exposed bedrock, with seasonal changes in current, depth, and turbidity. Some populations inhabit brackish water and others freshwater, alongside differences in reproductive strategy.
Breeding
Amphidromous populations spawn in fresh or brackish streams. Newly hatched drifting larvae are carried toward the sea and develop in estuarine nurseries under brackish to marine conditions. Later they move upstream, either reaching freshwater tributaries or staying in tidally influenced lower reaches.
Landlocked populations instead complete their life cycle in fresh water and tend to produce larger eggs. The CO label therefore neither proves a marine larval requirement nor guarantees freshwater-only breeding for every origin.
In nature, spawning activity runs from summer to early autumn. A male establishes a temporary area around a relatively flat rock, beneath which eggs are laid. He then expels the female and assumes brood care and defense.
Notes
CO is shorthand for cobalt, referring to the blue spots rather than serving as a formal species name. The fish belongs to the Rhinogobius brunneus complex and remains unresolved taxonomically.
Predorsal scaling and cheek sensory papillae help characterize the broader group. A photograph of blue spotting alone cannot demonstrate that every locality represents the same biological form.
