Overview
Rhinogobius leavelli usually shows an orange tail-base blotch and a dark vertical mark at the pectoral fin base. Several forms may exist under the name, with unresolved boundaries. Origin and the exceptionally small food required by larvae are important breeding considerations.
Distribution & habitat
The range extends from the Nam Ma and Nam Mat systems in northeastern Laos through northern Vietnam, including the Red River, to the Pearl drainage in Guangxi, China. The historical type locality corresponds approximately to hill streams near Wuzhou.
Aquarium setup
Provide a small group a footprint around 60 × 30 cm or larger. Sand, gravel, stones, branches, ceramic tubes, and pots should create shaded crevices and broken sight lines. Hardy attached plants can be included. Maintain high oxygen levels and some circulation without a torrent. Weekly changes of roughly 30–50 percent help prevent organic waste accumulation.
Diet & feeding
The genus generally feeds opportunistically on small animal prey. Offer suitable live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, mosquito larvae, brine shrimp, water fleas, and mysids. Dry foods may be accepted after acclimation but should not be a regular staple.
Behaviour & compatibility
Peaceful upper-water fishes with matching requirements are possible companions. Leave the bottom to these gobies in small aquariums; appropriate loaches are more feasible in larger quarters. Avoid strongly territorial bottom fishes. Small freshwater shrimp may be eaten.
Males defend territories, though plentiful cover usually limits serious injury. Keep at least two males with an equal or greater number of females, since inadequate company may lead to inactivity. Avoid other species of the genus because hybridization potential remains unclear.
Sexual dimorphism
Males are generally more colorful and develop longer dorsal and anal rays as they mature.
Breeding
Some wild populations spawn in fresh or brackish streams, with larvae developing in estuarine or marine nursery areas before moving upstream. Aquarium-traded fish appear capable of an entirely freshwater life cycle, but it is unresolved whether all these forms belong to one species.
Males defend sites beneath flat stones. A female may lay roughly three to four thousand small eggs, then leaves the male to guard them. Hatching usually takes three to four days. Larvae drift for about a day before swimming becomes more directed.
Initial food must be exceptionally small: even freshwater rotifers may be too large, and brine shrimp nauplii may not become suitable for nearly a month. Rearing methods for large-egged gobies therefore cannot be assumed applicable.
Notes
The orange tail-base mark and dark pectoral-base bar are clues rather than definitive identification. Variation may involve population or species differences, making accurate origin records valuable.
