概述

Rhinodoras dorbygnyi

Overview

A nocturnal, initially retiring doradid, Rhinodoras dorbygnyi is generally tolerant of suitably sized companions. Small fishes remain potential prey, however, so daytime inactivity should not be mistaken for compatibility with every community fish.

Distribution & habitat

Its range includes the Paraná basin of Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay, Argentina, and Brazil. Slow tributaries, creeks, and swamps provide roots and flooded vegetation for daytime shelter.

Aquarium setup

Allow an adult at least 120 × 60 × 60 cm of aquarium space. Use subdued lighting and multiple refuges made from pots, appropriately sized tubing, or tangled wood. Plants are optional but provide additional shade and cover.

New arrivals may remain hidden all day. Confidence commonly increases with growth and acclimation, and adults may eventually cruise even under aquarium lighting. Frequent disturbance of their retreats is unnecessary.

Diet & feeding

An adaptable omnivore, it accepts quality sinking pellets or bottom-feeding tablets as a staple, supplemented with bloodworms, small earthworms, and other live or frozen foods. Feed after lights out if a new fish remains reluctant to emerge. Settled specimens often learn to forage at normal feeding times.

Behaviour & compatibility

Choose peaceful companions too large to be swallowed and avoid territorial pressure. Appropriately sized characins, cyprinids, gouramis, livebearers, cichlids, and nonterritorial catfishes are possible choices.

Conspecifics are usually tolerated. Several individuals may occupy the same daytime retreat, with occasional jostling that seldom causes injury.

Breeding

Reproduction has not been documented in hobby aquaria.
