Overview
Plant-rich feeding and appreciable water movement suit Pseudanos trimaculatus. Small numbers of conspecifics can be aggressive, while larger groups need correspondingly more space. Slow companions with extended fins also risk damage.
Distribution & habitat
Native records cover Peru, Brazil, and Guyana. Small shoals occupy deeper water.
Aquarium setup
An aquarium around 90 × 30 × 30 cm and 85 L provides a starting point, with larger quarters for groups. Sand and branches form a suitable layout, and natural algal growth offers grazing.
Soft plants are eaten, and even tougher foliage may be picked at. Allow for this when planning vegetation. Use fairly strong circulation and a close-fitting cover, since members of the genus jump well.
Diet & feeding
This omnivore has a strong herbivorous emphasis. Offer live and frozen foods together with generous spinach, lettuce, cucumber, zucchini, and algae-based preparations.
Behaviour & compatibility
A few conspecifics may attack one another. Groups of six or more require a larger aquarium; otherwise, keep one with appropriately sized medium or large fishes. Robust characins, armored catfishes, and peaceful cichlids are possibilities, but other anostomids are unsuitable choices.
Avoid slow-moving, long-finned companions that may become targets for fin nipping.
