English
Overview
Protopterus dolloi is a large, long-lived lungfish best housed by itself. Access to air and effective escape prevention are fundamental. Its usually quiet behavior should not obscure its strength: it can escape or abruptly injure companions that have shared its tank for a long time.
Distribution & habitat
Its range includes the Central African Republic, both Congo republics, Gabon, and Angola. Rivers, swamps, marshes, backwaters, and seasonal floodplains are occupied, with some habitats drying completely during part of the year.
Aquarium setup
Adult accommodation must be very large; the listed minimum dimensions and volume are a lower limit rather than a generous allowance. Low activity does not eliminate the need to turn and move freely.
Keep current weak and lighting subdued. Roots, branches, and large smooth stones can provide shelter. A sandy or muddy bottom is useful but not obligatory.
Escape prevention and breathing access must work together. Fit a lid the fish cannot shift, close every escape gap, and leave roughly 15 cm between the water and cover for atmospheric breathing. A secure lid is not a reason to fill the enclosure to its underside.
Diet & feeding
Wild food includes fishes, invertebrates, amphibians, and plant material. Captive specimens adapt to varied offerings such as prawn, mussel, small fish, algae wafers, and vegetable matter. Larger animals can take appropriately sized whole fish.
Daily feeding is unnecessary. A tendency to rest should not be met with repeated feeding simply to provoke movement.
Behaviour & compatibility
Solitary housing is preferable even when prospective companions are large. A lungfish can remove chunks of tissue from another fish, and a long period without trouble does not make the combination dependable. Members of its own genus are also not tolerated; similar size does not solve this problem.
Take exceptional care during handling or maintenance that involves contact, since it can deliver a serious bite.
Sexual dimorphism
No dependable external sex differences are established. Body shape or fin appearance therefore does not provide a reliable basis for pairing fish.
Breeding
Captive spawning remains unconfirmed. In the wild, eggs are laid in a constructed nest and guarded by the male until hatching. That observation alone does not provide a practical home breeding method.
Notes
As water recedes, the fish excavates a muddy chamber and positions its head toward the opening. Further drying triggers mucus production around the body and a major reduction in metabolism, allowing it to await renewed rain in estivation. It enters this state less readily than some relatives; the adaptation does not remove ordinary aquarium requirements for water and surface access.
Both gills and paired lungs are present, but atmospheric breathing remains essential. Juvenile external gills diminish with maturity. The thin, fleshy paired fins serve mainly a tactile role and also assist movement.
A lifespan exceeding twenty years makes suitable space, feeding, security, and continued care a substantial long-term commitment.
