Overview
Uncommon in the hobby, Protomelas pleurotaenia uncovers food by blowing at the surface of the sand. Invertebrates and other exposed morsels are then eaten. Its mild general temperament should be distinguished from the territorial behavior associated with breeding.
Distribution & habitat
Known localities include Nkhata Bay and Monkey Bay in Lake Malawi. Vegetation beds between rocky and sandy areas form its characteristic habitat.
Aquarium setup
Use a sandy tank around 120 by 45 by 38 cm with cave-forming rocks and open areas. Groups of Vallisneria can reflect the vegetation of its habitat.
Diet & feeding
Live and frozen foods should be prominent, although other foods are accepted. Its localized blowing behavior exposes prey at the substrate surface.
Behaviour & compatibility
Choose calmer Malawian fishes rather than aggressive mbuna. Males defend territories, so multiple males demand considerable space. Several females per male are preferable for spreading attention during courtship.
Sexual dimorphism
Males grow larger, develop stronger coloration, and have longer dorsal, anal, and pelvic fins.
Breeding
The reproductive pattern is thought likely to involve maternal mouthbrooding, by analogy with related species.
