概述

Potamotrygon scobina

Overview

Identity is the first concern with Potamotrygon scobina. Other rays frequently carry its trade label, potentially invalidating adult-size and housing expectations. A reputation as an introductory ray does not remove the need for mature filtration, generous floor space, or careful spine management.

Distribution & habitat

Known origins lie in the middle and lower Brazilian Amazon region, including the Trombetas, Tocantins, and Pará. Like relatives, it uses river shallows, sandbars, and slow sandy or muddy tributaries, with seasonal access to flooded forest and receding-water pools.

Aquarium setup

Allow at least about 180 × 75 × 60 cm for an adult or pair, with larger and wider quarters for a group. Keep the floor open. Decoration is optional, and any large wood or smooth stones must resist displacement.

River sand offers cover for juveniles and alarmed rays; a bare floor simplifies cleaning. Dim light is suitable. Rooted vegetation may be eaten, while attached plants are not necessarily safe. Use a large mature sump or suitable external filtration, with around four tank volumes per hour as a circulation reference and surface movement for oxygenation.

Change about 50% weekly and prevent nitrogenous-waste accumulation. Isolate heaters to avoid contact burns and close the lid securely because feeding rays may emerge above the surface.

Diet & feeding

Related rays generally eat fish and aquatic invertebrates. Provide varied animal foods at least twice daily. Juveniles take bloodworms, Tubifex, brine shrimp, and krill; adults need suitable fish flesh, shellfish, shrimp, squid, and earthworms.

Thin arrivals refusing frozen food may first need live bloodworms or earthworms, followed by gradual conversion after recovery. Avoid beef heart, chicken, and other mammalian or bird meat. Routine feeder fish are unnecessary and add parasite or pathogen risks.

Behaviour & compatibility

Companions must be large enough not to become prey but neither aggressive nor strongly territorial. Peaceful upper-water fishes are preferable; large bottom dwellers need additional floor area. Smaller fish such as discus may be taken at night, and some large suckermouth catfish can injure discs by attaching to them.

Different ray species may hybridize, so unrestricted mixing conflicts with maintaining pure lines. The missing disc sections of so-called bat rays represent developmental abnormalities rather than a new natural species.

Sexual dimorphism

Males have a pair of backward-projecting claspers on the inner pelvic-fin margins. These are smaller but observable in juveniles.

Breeding

Relatives use live birth with continued maternal nourishment, with uterine secretions supporting embryos after yolk use. Arbitrarily combining sexes does not guarantee a pair; youngsters selecting partners require years and substantial space.

General breeding experience favors females larger than males. Males chase and bite the disc to position themselves, and prolonged unsuccessful pursuit can injure females. Have separation facilities available. Fertilization is internal; captive gestation in the genus is often nine to twelve weeks, with greater feeding needs during pregnancy.

Separate pups after birth. If water clouds, make a substantial change after moving them. Yolk reserves may last up to about a week, followed by several daily meals of live or frozen food; mixed live items can encourage conversion. Rest females after two or three litters. These are comparative husbandry observations, not a guaranteed species-specific schedule.

Notes

Five tail-spine rows have been suggested as an identification clue, but the report is provisional. Assess Brazilian provenance rather than assuming a similar Peruvian ray is this species.

Avoid petting or nets. Transfer with a solid container or large fish bag, handle shed spines cautiously, and seek care after a sting. Confirm feeding and watch for prominent tail-base structures, hollows between the eyes, or curled disc edges.
