English

Overview

Potamotrygon schroederi, the flower ray, combines a large disc with a long tail. It should not be equated automatically with the Peruvian fish traded as Peru flower or P40. Check the scientific name and provenance, and include tail length when planning space.

Distribution & habitat

Records come from Brazil and Venezuela, including the Apure in the Orinoco system and Negro in the Amazon basin. Like relatives, it uses sandbars, river shallows, and slow tributaries over sand or mud, entering flooded forest seasonally.

Aquarium setup

Allow at least about 240 × 90 × 75 cm for an adult or pair and preserve open floor space. Decoration is optional; any wood or smooth rocks must be secure against movement. Dim light is suitable. Rooted plants may be damaged or eaten, and attached plants are not guaranteed to persist.

River sand is particularly useful for juveniles and allows burial for cover. A bare base is easier to clean but removes that option. Use strong mature biological filtration through a sump or suitable external filters, with about four tank volumes per hour as a circulation reference. Agitate the surface for oxygenation and isolate heaters to prevent contact burns.

Change about 50% weekly and prevent nitrogenous-waste buildup. Fit a close cover: rays can rise and partly emerge while feeding, even in a large aquarium.

Diet & feeding

Related rays generally consume fish, worms, and crustaceans. Offer varied animal foods at least twice daily. Juveniles take bloodworms, Tubifex, brine shrimp, and krill; larger fish need suitable fish flesh, shellfish, shrimp, squid, and earthworms.

Thin newcomers may refuse frozen foods. Live bloodworms or earthworms can establish feeding before conversion once condition improves. Avoid beef heart, chicken, and other mammalian or bird meat. Routine feeder fish add parasite and pathogen risks.

Behaviour & compatibility

Despite strong predatory abilities, rays can fare poorly with aggressive or territorial companions. Choose sufficiently large, peaceful fishes preferably using upper water. Additional large bottom dwellers substantially increase floor-space requirements.

Do not assume smaller fish such as discus are safe. Large suckermouth catfish may attach to the disc and injure it. Related rays can hybridize, so preserve separate provenance and avoid interpreting captive mixed-parentage patterns as wild forms.

Sexual dimorphism

Males have paired claspers extending backward along the inner pelvic-fin edges. Smaller structures remain visible in juveniles.

Breeding

The genus uses live birth with continued maternal nourishment: embryos first consume yolk, then receive uterine secretions before emerging as pups. The following pairing and rearing experience is comparative, not a guarantee of identical timing for every flower-ray pair.

A female larger than the male is better placed to withstand courtship. Males chase and bite the disc to position themselves; persistent unsuccessful pursuit can injure the female, so separation facilities are essential. Fertilization is internal. General captive gestation is often nine to twelve weeks, with greater food demand from pregnant females.

Separate pups after birth to reduce predation. If the water clouds, make a substantial change after moving them. Yolk reserves may last up to about a week, followed by several daily meals of quality live or frozen food. Mixing live items can help reluctant pups accept frozen fare. Rest females away from males after two or three litters rather than allowing unbroken reproduction.

Notes

Peru flower or P40 may represent a different undescribed lineage; a shop label cannot settle identity. Provenance matters.

Defensive spines remain hazardous when shed. Avoid petting and nets; transfer with a solid container or large fish bag, and seek medical care after a sting. Confirm feeding before acquisition. Hollowing between the eyes or prominent tail-base structures indicates poor condition, while persistently curled disc edges are a serious abnormality.
