Overview

Widely kept and often hardy after acclimation, Potamotrygon motoro is nevertheless a large, demanding freshwater ray. Geographic forms vary in pattern and color. Adult housing, heavy feeding, and unusually forceful male courtship deserve attention before purchase.

Distribution & habitat

Its range spans Colombia, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Argentina, including the Amazon and several other major river systems. Habitats described for the genus include sandbanks, shallow muddy channels, quiet tributaries, flooded forest, and residual floodplain pools.

Aquarium setup

The suggested starting dimensions for an adult or pair are 240 by 90 by 75 cm. Maximize clear floor space, secure heavy decor, and use subdued lighting. Fine sand permits burial; a bare floor makes cleaning easier but removes this shelter. Both rooted and attached plants may be damaged.

Provide generous mature biological filtration. A sump keeps heaters away from the disc and reduces contact burns; suitably sized canisters are alternatives. Around four turnovers hourly, surface agitation, and weekly changes of roughly half the water form the general maintenance guidance. Secure the lid against surface activity.

Diet & feeding

General freshwater-ray care uses varied animal foods, from small worms, Artemia, and krill for juveniles to suitably sized shellfish, shrimp, squid, fish, and earthworms. At least two daily meals are suggested, making food supply a substantial long-term commitment.

A thin newcomer may need live worms to establish feeding before a gradual move to frozen items. Avoid mammalian and avian meats and routine feeder fish because of unsuitable fats or pathogen risks.

Behaviour & compatibility

Choose peaceful companions that cannot be swallowed, ideally occupying upper water. Territorial tankmates can cause chronic stress. Suckermouth catfish may damage the disc by attaching to it. River-ray species can hybridize, making mixed groups unsuitable when preserving species identity is the aim.

Sexual dimorphism

Males carry paired claspers projecting behind the inner pelvic-fin margins. These structures are smaller in juveniles but can still be distinguished.

Breeding

Males of this species can seriously injure females during mating. Provide separation facilities before attempting a pairing, choose a well-conditioned female larger than the male, and do not assume that any male and female will be compatible.

At genus level, young develop internally, first on yolk and subsequently on uterine nourishment. Related breeding practice supplies pregnant females generously, separates newborns for safety, and offers frequent small meals after yolk absorption. Regular water changes and recovery breaks for repeatedly breeding females are also important.

Notes

Color forms and trade numbers alone do not guarantee identification, especially where hybrids occur. Attached and recently shed spines remain hazardous. Avoid direct handling and nets, use an appropriate solid container or large fish bag for transfer, and seek medical care after a sting. Check feeding before purchase; sunken areas, prominent pelvic structures, or persistently curled disc edges indicate poor condition.
