English
Overview
Relatively small among freshwater rays, Potamotrygon hystrix is associated with P06. Identification is crucial because larger species have repeatedly been sold under its name. A small-ray label is no substitute for knowing the eventual disc size.
Distribution & habitat
It occurs in the Paraná and Paraguay basins of Argentina and Brazil. Distant Guiana and Venezuelan records may concern other species. Genus-level habitat descriptions include sandbanks, muddy slow channels, shallows, and seasonal flood waters.
Aquarium setup
For one adult, 180 by 60 by 60 cm is the suggested starting point; greater length and width are preferable, with much more room for several rays. Secure heavy decor and leave an open floor. Fine river sand permits burial, while bare floors simplify cleaning at the cost of refuge. Plants may be damaged.
Use substantial biological filtration. A sump separates heaters and fragile equipment from the fish; adequately sized canisters are alternatives. Suggested turnover is about four times hourly, with surface agitation and weekly changes around half the water. Fit the cover securely against surface feeding activity.
Diet & feeding
Freshwater-ray guidance favors varied animal foods, scaling small invertebrates for juveniles up to suitable shellfish, shrimp, squid, fish, and earthworms. At least two meals daily are generally suggested.
A thin newcomer refusing frozen food needs prompt feeding with suitable live prey, followed by gradual conversion after recovery. Avoid mammalian or avian meat and routine feeder fish.
Behaviour & compatibility
Companions should be peaceful, too large to eat, and not crowd the floor; upper-water fish are easier to accommodate. Territorial fish cause stress, and suckermouth catfish can injure the disc. Different river-ray species may hybridize, so mixed breeding groups do not preserve species identity.
Sexual dimorphism
Paired backward-projecting claspers on the inner pelvic fins identify males, including juveniles when examined carefully.
Breeding
Genus-level breeding practice involves internal fertilization and maternal nourishment of live young. Pair choice is selective, and a larger well-conditioned female is preferable. Courtship biting can cause injuries, so separation facilities are necessary; owning one of each sex does not guarantee safe pairing.
Related-ray care increases food during gestation, separates newborns from potential predators, and provides frequent suitable meals once yolk is absorbed. Females also need recovery periods between repeated litters.
Notes
Avoid nets and direct handling because both attached and recently shed spines remain dangerous. Use a suitable solid container or large fish bag, and seek medical care after a sting. Check feeding and disc condition before purchase; sunken areas, protruding pelvic structures, and curled margins are warning signs. Peruvian fish sold under this name warrant particular scrutiny because misidentification can leave adult housing inadequate.
