Overview

The relatively uncommon Polypterus weeksii is a large nocturnal bichir that finds food mainly by smell. It needs generous floor space, reliable escape prevention, and an unobstructed route to atmospheric air.

Distribution & habitat

It occurs in parts of the Congo drainage within the Republic of Congo and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Aquarium setup

Provide a footprint around 150 × 60 cm. Horizontal area is more valuable than additional depth. Soft substrate, wood, and smooth rocks create suitable shelters, with plants optional.

Secure the cover against escape while allowing the fish to surface freely. It breathes air and may drown if completely denied access to it, so containment must not obstruct ventilation at the surface.

Diet & feeding

This carnivore usually does not take dry food immediately, although some individuals learn to accept pellets. Suitable live or frozen choices include prawn, earthworms, mussel, and appropriately sized fish.

Because vision is poor and food location depends largely on smell, check what it actually eats rather than relying on the feeding response of other occupants.

Behaviour & compatibility

It is relatively peaceful apart from predation, but any fish fitting into its mouth is vulnerable. Companions need sufficient size and compatible environmental requirements. Other bichirs and large fishes still require individual assessment rather than automatic approval by category.

Sexual dimorphism

The mature male has a thicker anal fin than the female.

Breeding

Captive reproduction is unrecorded for this species, and the proposed behavior is inferred from relatives. Rainy-season changes in temperature and chemistry may provide cues, but do not constitute a reliable established induction method.

A related-species approach uses a large aquarium, soft slightly acidic water, and dense plants or mops. Males chase and nudge females, cup eggs with the anal and caudal fins, fertilize them, and scatter them among vegetation. Adults are then separated from the eggs. Incubation of three to four days, free swimming roughly three days later, and initial feeding on microworms or brine-shrimp nauplii remain comparative timings rather than confirmed species-specific results. Fry may move little, making observation of actual food uptake essential.

Notes

This upper-jawed species retains juvenile external gills longer than many relatives, for reasons that remain unclear. Their persistence alone is therefore not an abnormal identification feature.

Monitor newly acquired fish for health and parasite problems during the first weeks. Unusual respiratory adaptations and general hardiness do not replace routine aquarium care.
