Overview
Space and water quality strongly influence the impressive male dorsal fin of Poecilia velifera. It is more demanding than many related livebearers, requiring uncrowded quarters and hard, nonacidic water for good development.
Distribution & habitat
Southeastern Mexico is its native range. Populations in Colombia, Israel, Singapore, Taiwan, and other introduced locations are outside that original range.
Aquarium setup
Use a tank at least about 91 cm long, with additional space where possible. Combine dense plants and floating shade with open water. Restricted space or excessive stocking may prevent full male dorsal-fin development.
Moderately hard or harder water is essential. Soft, acidic conditions can weaken fish, sometimes producing shivering movements, clamped fins, or fungal problems. Calcium and magnesium underpin long-term health; appropriate hard freshwater does not require added salt. Brackish systems are also possible, with stability and companion requirements still important.
Diet & feeding
Small bottom-dwelling animals and detritus form part of its natural omnivorous diet. It accepts live, frozen, and prepared foods. Add plant foods such as softened spinach, cucumber, or vegetable flakes.
Behaviour & compatibility
Peaceful companions must share its tolerance of hard water. Suitable swordtails, platies, and some catfishes, cyprinids, or characins can be considered. Avoid other mollies when preventing hybridization. Brackish communities require a separate selection of compatible species.
Sexual dimorphism
The slightly smaller male has a gonopodium and a tall, elongated dorsal fin.
Breeding
Breeding is somewhat less straightforward than with many common livebearers. Keep two females per male to distribute courtship. Pregnancy lasts about four to eight weeks; 20–60 young is typical, although broods can approach 200. Newborns immediately accept Artemia nauplii, microworms, or crushed flakes.
Plants shelter young from adults and other fishes. For closer control, move a gravid female to a separate aquarium and return her after delivery. Wild-type fish are less prone to eating offspring, but this should not be generalized to domestic stock.
Notes
Young fish resemble Poecilia latipinna. Dorsal-fin ray counts are useful: usually 18–19 in this species versus about 14 in its relative. Some ornamental stocks have hybrid ancestry.
Selected forms include albino, black, and red fish. Balloon body shapes may bring digestive or swimming-bladder problems and reduce longevity, so unusual appearance should not be equated with good health.
