食性与喂食
本种杂食，优质下沉颗粒或底栖饲料可作为基础，搭配红虫、小蚯蚓等活饵或冷冻食物。熄灯后投喂有助于确保它真正吃到食物。
习性与混养
本性不主动攻击其他鱼，却会吞食较小缸友，因此应选择体形大到无法被当作食物的温和鱼。同种通常可以群养，数尾可能共用白天的躲藏处，偶有争位一般不致受伤。

可靠的雌雄辨别及普通鱼缸繁殖方法尚不明确。野外据称在水面植物间产卵，但证据有限。
它可通过胸鳍棘摩擦和鳔相关肌肉振动发声。棘条容易挂网并刺伤皮肤，转移时需留意。幼鱼曾被观察到清理大型鱼体表寄生物及死鳞，这种特定观察不意味着可与任意大型掠食鱼安全混养。

Overview
Platydoras armatulus is a familiar striped thorny catfish with a robust constitution. Adult size, prolonged hiding, and consumption of smaller companions make it better suited to communities of larger fishes than to an unrestricted mixed aquarium.
Distribution & habitat
Its broad range includes the Orinoco in Colombia and Venezuela, Guyana's Essequibo, coastal Surinamese and French Guianan waters, parts of the Amazon in Peru, Bolivia, and Brazil, and Brazil's Tocantins and Parnaíba systems.
Slow or standing tributaries, creeks, and swamps are typical, with fish sheltering among roots and submerged vegetation.
Aquarium setup
Despite modest activity, provide at least approximately 120 × 30 × 30 cm. Use subdued light and abundant retreats made with pots, tubes, or tangled wood. Plants add shade and cover but are optional.
Young fish often hide during daylight. Adults become bolder and may move around with the lights on, so nocturnal tendencies do not imply complete daytime inactivity.
Diet & feeding
An omnivore, it accepts quality sinking pellets or tablets as a staple, supplemented with live or frozen bloodworms, small earthworms, and similar foods. Feeding after dark helps it obtain its share.
Behaviour & compatibility
It is nonaggressive but eats smaller fishes. Select peaceful companions too large to be swallowed. Conspecific groups are generally tolerated and may share a daytime shelter, with minor positional disputes usually causing no injury.
Notes
Reliable sexing and an ordinary aquarium breeding method remain unknown. Spawning among surface plants in nature is reported tentatively.
Pectoral-spine friction and swim-bladder vibration produce audible sounds. Spines snag netting and can puncture skin during transfers. Juveniles have been observed removing parasites and dead scales from larger fishes; this specific cleaning interaction does not establish safety with arbitrary large predators.
