Overview
An active shoaling catfish, Pimelodus maculatus often cruises during daylight once settled under subdued lighting. Limited social aggression does not prevent predation on small fish. Companions need both adequate size and the ability to coexist with its energetic activity.
Distribution & habitat
It is native to the Paraná and São Francisco systems in Brazil and Argentina. Shallow flowing channels over sand or mud are typical, but receding floods also leave pools and small lakes it can occupy.
Aquarium setup
Use at least the suggested 120 by 60 by 60 cm with extensive swimming space and a few retreats. Fine sand, wood, and rounded stones create a riverine setting. Shade-tolerant plants attached to decor preserve floor area. Strong filtration, circulation, and weekly partial changes are important; deteriorating water can damage the barbels.
Diet & feeding
Aquatic invertebrates dominate natural feeding. Live or frozen small prey and sinking foods are readily taken in captivity. Initially feeding after dark may help new fish. Adults need meals only every few days, as they can gorge to extreme abdominal distension. A group may become very excited once it detects food.
Behaviour & compatibility
Avoid swallowable or slow-moving companions. Long barbels and energetic night or feeding activity can disturb slower fish. Robust active species are better candidates. Groups are more confident, whereas solitary fish often remain hidden until darkness.
Sexual dimorphism
Adult females may be stockier, but external sexing remains uncertain.
Breeding
Reproduction follows long upstream movements during the wet season. The associated environmental and water-chemistry changes are difficult to reproduce, so ordinary maintenance should not be mistaken for an established spawning method.
Notes
New imports may be weakened by poor nutrition or oxygen deprivation. The scaleless skin also warrants care when choosing medications. Rigid fin spines can catch in netting and cause painful punctures; a suitable container is preferable to handling the fish directly.
