Overview

Piaractus brachypomus is a very large serrasalmid whose red-bellied juveniles can resemble piranhas despite a mainly plant-based diet. Its eventual size and housing demands are the decisive constraints, not its appearance as a small fish at purchase.

Distribution & habitat

It is native to the Orinoco and Amazon basins of Colombia, Venezuela, Peru, Bolivia, and Brazil. Introduced or farmed populations occur elsewhere.

Main channels, floodplains, and seasonally flooded forest are used. Shallow, slow areas with overhanging or floating plants are favored. Young spend their early months in food-rich floodplain habitats offering relatively less predation pressure.

Aquarium setup

Long-term housing calls for a footprint around 300 × 90 cm or more. Adults are active, so decorations must not restrict swimming. Plants are consumed, and the few large rocks or pieces of wood used should be secured against displacement.

Large-capacity, efficient biological filtration is needed. A sump can place fragile equipment outside the main aquarium, reducing damage from a powerful fish. Perform substantial, regular water changes. A cramped tank will not keep rapidly growing juveniles permanently small in a healthy way.

Diet & feeding

Stomach examinations indicate that fruits, nuts, and seeds dominate, with opportunistic consumption of insects, zooplankton, and small fishes. Offer good pellets with abundant produce, rotating greens, peas, carrots, apples, bananas, and other suitable options. The vegetarian piranha label does not describe every aspect of its feeding behavior.

Behaviour & compatibility

It is usually peaceful toward larger species, although constant movement may disturb shy or sedentary companions. Small fish remain at risk. A community of large fishes requires accommodation far beyond a conventional aquarium.

Juveniles form groups and become more independent with age. Adult groups are possible with sufficient room, while crowding can encourage chasing and fin damage to conspecifics and other fishes.

Sexual dimorphism

Mature females generally have a slightly rounder abdomen.

Breeding

Food-fish farms breed it commercially, often using hormone induction. This does not make it an established, easy breeding project in ornamental aquariums.

Notes

Juvenile coloration can mimic a red-bellied piranha, so color alone is insufficient for identification. Strong jaws and molar-like teeth crush tough plant foods and can inflict a bite during maintenance. Some seeds pass through intact, suggesting a role in floodplain seed dispersal. Plan adult accommodation in advance rather than releasing an outgrown fish into the wild.
