Overview

Dwarf Indian mudskippers (Periophthalmus novemradiatus) spend much of their time in shallows, on banks, or on partly submerged objects. They need a warm, humid brackish enclosure with land areas. Their small size does not remove the need for individual territories.

Distribution & habitat

The range extends from eastern India to southern Thailand along the coast. Some records from Malaysia and Indonesia concern a similar species instead.

Estuarine mangrove mudflats are typical. In tidal habitats, fish forage over exposed mud at low water and retreat into submerged burrows as the tide rises.

Aquarium setup

A trio needs a footprint of at least roughly 75 × 30 cm, with more space preferable. Give each fish usable shore and refuge. Sand or suitable mud can form a sloping bank, supplemented by partly submerged wood.

Exposed land is essential. Keep the air highly humid and close to water temperature, and fit a secure lid for moisture retention and escape prevention. Efficient filtration handles their waste. Brackish water around specific gravity 1.005 is suggested; avoid acidic conditions.

Diet & feeding

Wild fish mainly eat small crabs, insects, and other invertebrates. They adapt well to live and frozen foods in captivity. Suitable frozen offerings with regular live supplements make a useful menu. Although dry food may be accepted, swelling in the gut is a concern, so it should not be the routine staple.

Behaviour & compatibility

A dedicated setup is usually best. Appropriately sized brackish companions may work in sufficient space, but very small fishes risk being eaten.

Territorial encounters involve repeated dorsal fin displays and may progress to lunging or biting. Serious damage is not typical, yet cramped conditions increase disputes and fin injuries. Provide adequate territory rather than relying on tolerance.

Sexual dimorphism

External sex differences remain unconfirmed. A fuller abdomen at maturity may indicate a female, while extension of the first dorsal ray may also be sex-related. Neither is a definitive guide.

Breeding

Wild males excavate deep mud burrows, where mating and care are thought to occur. The complex burrow and tidal environment is difficult to recreate, and this inference should not be presented as a tested aquarium breeding procedure.

Notes

Pectoral fins support movement on land, while a bent tail propels jumps. Adapted skin and mouth surfaces and retained water and air around the gills support terrestrial activity. Humidity remains essential, and fish return to water to wet themselves.
