English
Overview
Pangio piperata is a slender eel loach with fine dark speckles over a yellow-brown body, often forming an irregular lateral stripe. It is occasionally imported among other eel loaches. Some populations of Pangio shelfordii look similar, making identification a matter of combining several features.
Distribution & habitat
Records include Terengganu, Penang, and Johor in Peninsular Malaysia, southern Thailand, Riau in Sumatra, and the Rajang basin in Sarawak. Thai and Malaysian populations separated into different groups in genetic analyses, suggesting that more than one species may be involved despite limited visible differences.
Typical habitats are shallow, slow forest streams, swamps, oxbows, and backwaters. Both peat-associated blackwater and variably stained clear water occur. Dense tree cover shades mineral-poor, weakly buffered water over peat, mud, or sand, with leaf piles supplying shelter.
Aquarium setup
Allow a footprint of at least about 45 × 30 cm. Soft sand permits digging and burial, whereas coarse gravel can cause stress, injury, or feeding difficulty. Roots, branches, and dried leaves form several shaded retreats; low-light plants can be included.
Use gentle filtration with modest surface movement rather than strong current. Guard intakes against small fish entering them and secure the cover closely, particularly during the settling-in period when jumping is a concern.
Diet & feeding
It primarily sifts insect larvae, small crustaceans, and other small animals from the substrate. Organic debris and plant material within prey may also contribute to the diet. Offer sinking prepared foods alongside regular small live or frozen Daphnia, Artemia, bloodworms, and microworms.
Behaviour & compatibility
Eel loaches are generally peaceful, though eggs or fry may be eaten. Keep at least five or six individuals; resting fish often share one confined shelter. Small, mild-mannered companions with similar water needs are preferable. Other sand-dwelling loaches may be strongly competitive or territorial and need careful assessment.
Sexual dimorphism
Mature females are usually larger and fuller-bodied. Males develop a thickened, branched first pectoral ray, and their pectoral fins can be about twice the female length. The difference is more pronounced than in Pangio shelfordii.
Notes
Nasal barbels are absent, the tail edge is notched, and a dark marking occurs at the tail base. Some specimens also have dorsal saddles. The overall pattern is generally simpler than in P. shelfordii, but the two can occur together and spotting alone may mislead. Sharp spines beneath the eyes can catch in nets when fish are stressed.
