Overview

Pangio malayana has 10–16 dark saddles across the upper body and a black band at the tail base. It often arrives mixed with similar eel loaches. Group housing, soft sand, subdued light, and plentiful shelter support its normal behavior.

Distribution & habitat

Originally recorded from Johor and Pahang in Peninsular Malaysia, it is also known from the Batang Hari in Sumatra and the Kapuas system of West Kalimantan in Indonesian Borneo.

It commonly occupies shallow, slow forest streams, swamps, oxbows, and backwaters. Many sites are associated with old peat swamps and dark water. Tree cover provides shade over water with very little dissolved mineral content and weak buffering. Peat, mud, or sand may form the bottom, while leaf piles provide important cover.

Aquarium setup

Allow a footprint of at least about 45 × 30 cm. Use soft sand so the fish can dig and bury itself. Coarse gravel can abrade the body, cause stress, or interfere with feeding. Driftwood roots, branches, and leaves create multiple shaded retreats, with low-light plants if desired.

Keep lighting subdued and filtration gentle, producing a little surface movement without strong current. Prevent access to filter intakes and fit the cover securely, particularly when fish have recently been introduced.

Diet & feeding

It sorts substrate through the mouth and gills to find insect larvae, small crustaceans, and similar prey. Organic debris and plant material inside prey may also be ingested, but this does not make it a specialized plant eater.

Offer sinking prepared foods and regular small live or frozen items such as Daphnia, Artemia, bloodworms, and microworms. Food must be small enough and reach the sheltered areas used by the fish.

Behaviour & compatibility

Eel loaches are generally peaceful toward one another and other fishes, though eggs or fry may be eaten. Keep at least five or six; resting individuals often share the same crevice. Small, peaceful companions suited to similar soft-water conditions are preferable. Other sand-dwelling loaches require individual assessment because some are strongly competitive or territorial.

Sexual dimorphism

Mature females are generally slightly larger and fuller-bodied. Adult males develop a thickened, branched first pectoral ray.

Notes

The notched tail edge can be compared with the more truncate tail of Pangio cuneovirgata. A grayish lateral stripe, three dark head bars, and a clear tail beyond the basal black band offer additional clues. Color and pattern can vary among eel loaches, so identification should combine several features. Erected spines below the eyes may become caught in nets during handling.
