Overview

Pangio filinaris is a small, relatively deep-bodied eel loach with plain coloration and nasal barbels. It sometimes arrives incidentally in shipments of other fishes. Past confusion with similar plain species means that a lack of stripes or a sales label alone is insufficient for identification.

Distribution & habitat

It is known only from Pahang and Terengganu in Peninsular Malaysia. The type locality is the Tersat, a tributary of the Terengganu River.

Its particular habitat is poorly established. It may use environments similar to those of related eel loaches: shallow, slow forest streams, swamps, oxbows, and backwaters. Such environments are often shaded, weakly buffered, and low in minerals, with peat, mud, or sand beneath accumulated leaves. They may contain peat-associated blackwater or variably stained clear water. This account of related loach habitats should not be read as confirmed conditions at every locality for this species.

Aquarium setup

Provide a footprint of at least about 45 × 30 cm with soft sand for digging and burial. Coarse gravel can cause stress, injury, or disrupted feeding. Roots, branches, and leaves create shade and retreats; low-light plants can be included under subdued illumination.

Keep filtration gentle, with slight surface movement rather than strong current. Protect intakes against small fish entering them and close gaps around the aquarium cover. Newly introduced loaches may jump while settling.

Diet & feeding

It primarily extracts insect larvae, small crustaceans, and other small animals from the substrate. Some organic debris and plant matter inside prey may also be consumed. Offer sinking prepared food together with regular live or frozen Daphnia, Artemia, bloodworms, microworms, and similar foods.

Behaviour & compatibility

Eel loaches are generally peaceful with conspecifics and other fishes, although eggs and fry may be eaten. Keep at least five or six; resting fish often share a single hidden corner. Small, quiet companions with matching water requirements are preferable. Other loaches should be assessed for strong feeding competition or territorial behavior before being added.

Sexual dimorphism

Mature females are usually larger and fuller-bodied. The first pectoral-fin ray becomes thickened and branched in adult males.

Notes

A faint lateral stripe may be visible, and the tail edge is notched. Compared with Pangio mariarum, this species is deeper-bodied and males do not have conspicuously upturned pectoral fins. The more slender P. mariarum comes from northern Borneo. The invented trade name “mariae” is not a reliable species designation. Sharp spines below the eyes may catch in nets when fish are stressed.
