Overview

Pangio doriae is a slender, wormlike loach often traded under the general name “eel loach.” It may appear as an incidental fish in other shipments. A conspicuous pair of nasal barbels is useful for identification; an elongated, plain body alone does not distinguish it from relatives.

Distribution & habitat

Confirmed localities include Sarawak in Malaysian Borneo and Peninsular Malaysia. Fish from Sumatra's Batang Hari drainage once identified as this species were subsequently described as Pangio bitaimac, so those records should not simply be retained in its range.

It inhabits shallow, slow forest streams, swamps, oxbows, and backwaters. Sites include peat-associated blackwater and clear water with variable staining. Tree cover shades water with very low mineral content and weak buffering. Peat, mud, or sand forms the bottom, with many fish occupying leaf accumulations.

Aquarium setup

Allow a footprint of at least about 60 × 30 cm. Soft sand permits digging and burial; coarse gravel can cause stress, injury, and feeding difficulties. Roots, branches, and dried leaves provide shade and narrow retreats. Subdued lighting and low-light plants are appropriate.

Use gentle filtration with slight surface movement and avoid strong current. Guard filter intakes and close gaps around the lid, taking particular care after fish are moved into a new environment.

Diet & feeding

It primarily sifts small animals from the substrate, including insect larvae and crustaceans. Organic debris and plant material inside prey may also contribute a smaller part of the diet. Offer sinking prepared food alongside regular live or frozen Daphnia, Artemia, bloodworms, microworms, and similar foods.

Behaviour & compatibility

Eel loaches are generally peaceful toward conspecifics and other fishes, though eggs and fry may be eaten. Keep at least five or six individuals; resting fish often gather tightly beneath the same shelter. Select small, peaceful companions from comparable conditions. Assess other loaches carefully for strong food competition, territoriality, or aggression before combining them.

Sexual dimorphism

Mature males have a thickened, branched first pectoral ray. Their pectoral fins are also longer and distinctly upturned. Adult females are usually fuller-bodied and slightly larger.

Notes

Prominent nasal barbels separate it from Pangio anguillaris, while scales on the cheeks distinguish it from Pangio bitaimac. Pelvic fins are present, and the body lacks the dark saddles of some other relatives. Plain, elongated eel loaches should not all be assigned to one species. Stress can cause the sharp spines beneath the eyes to catch in aquarium nets.
