Overview

Osteogaster rabauti, often encountered under the older name Corydoras rabauti, is a peaceful schooling armored catfish. Identification deserves attention: the broad upper-body stripe continues onto the lower part of the tail base, unlike that of a close look-alike.

Distribution & habitat

Most records come from the Javari drainage along the Brazil–Peru border near the three-country frontier with Colombia. A Colombian occurrence is possible, but the full range remains unclear. Collection information suggests floodplain lakes, oxbows, and river habitats.

Aquarium setup

Provide a footprint of at least approximately 90 × 30 cm. Fine sand is preferable, although smooth gravel can work if kept exceptionally clean. Furnishings are flexible, but include cover to provide security.

Diet & feeding

Offer sinking prepared foods alongside small live or frozen items such as bloodworms and Tubifex. Variety and direct access to food matter. The fish should neither depend on other inhabitants' leftovers nor be expected to clean the aquarium.

Behaviour & compatibility

Maintain this mild, social species in a group of at least four to six individuals.

Sexual dimorphism

Females generally grow larger. Mature females are distinctly broader and deeper through the body than males.

Breeding

Use two or more males per female where possible. When females are visibly full of eggs, a cooler water change of around 50–70% with increased aeration and flow can encourage spawning; stimulation may need repeating. Eggs attach to glass, fine vegetation, or submerged spawning mops. Mops simplify removal of the clutch.

Separate eggs and adults after spawning. A hatching container should use the same water with ample oxygenation and management of fungal losses. Hatching usually takes about 3–4 days. Once yolk reserves are exhausted, the fry accept microworms and Artemia nauplii. Rearing requires excellent water quality, and a thin sand covering appears to reduce health problems compared with a bare floor.

Notes

In the similar Osteogaster zygata, the dark stripe remains on the upper tail base rather than extending downward. An albino form of this species is occasionally sold.

Bony plates cover the body, and occasional surface gulps supplement aquatic respiration. Handle carefully around the sharp pectoral spines, which can inflict painful punctures. Mild toxicity of secretions near the spine bases has been suggested but remains uncertain.
