Overview

The unusual external teeth of Osphronemus exodon remain visible even when its mouth closes. This gourami can reach about 60 cm and leaps to take fruit from overhanging branches, so its adult dimensions and jumping behavior should shape aquarium planning.

Distribution & habitat

It occurs in Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia. Large-river backwaters and slow reaches provide permanent habitat; flooded forests become accessible during the rains, with fish retreating as water levels fall.

Aquarium setup

Treat a 180 by 60 by 60 cm aquarium as a bare adult minimum and provide more room where possible. Substantial wood and smooth rocks create shelter. Its heavy waste load requires powerful, efficient filtration. Floating plants offer shade, although they and other vegetation may become food.

Diet & feeding

Build meals around vegetable-based pellets, leafy greens, suitable vegetables, and fruit. Small live or frozen supplements can be included without displacing the predominantly plant-based diet.

Behaviour & compatibility

Some adults become aggressive, particularly when confined. With sufficient room they often coexist with appropriately sized large barbs, knifefishes, or catfishes, but compatibility needs to be assessed for each individual.

Breeding

A possible trial would borrow the vegetation-nest method used by giant gouramis, rather than assume it is established for this species. That approach provides surface plants for a male-built nest, separates the displaced female, and leaves the male tending eggs. In the comparator species, eggs hatch after 24–36 hours and young swim freely three to five days later, accepting brine shrimp nauplii. These timings are a starting hypothesis here, and any attempt requires an enormous aquarium or suitable tropical pond.

Notes

Extra bands of teeth on the outer lips help pluck hanging fruit. Juveniles show vertical bars and a dark spot just before the caudal peduncle.
