Overview
Large but often shy, Ompok bimaculatus is peaceful only in the sense of social aggression: smaller fish are still vulnerable to its sharp teeth. Its very broad reported range may encompass more than one species, so apparent environmental tolerance may conceal population differences.
Distribution & habitat
Reported distribution extends from Afghanistan and Pakistan across South Asia to China and Southeast Asia. Habitats include slow turbid streams, canals, and flowing rivers, with wet-season movements into flooded areas. Marked differences among populations complicate interpretation of that broad range.
Aquarium setup
Use the suggested 180 by 60 by 60 cm reference with extensive open space and suitably broad shelters. Plants may be disturbed by its movements. Strong filtration, some current, and regular water changes handle substantial waste and prevent declining conditions.
Diet & feeding
Most live, frozen, and prepared foods are accepted. Larger specimens can take earthworms, suitable prawns and mussels, and pellets.
Behaviour & compatibility
Select peaceful medium or large companions beyond swallowing size. Its shy behavior does not make small fish safe.
Sexual dimorphism
Males have pectoral-spine serration absent in females, while mature females are thicker-bodied.
Breeding
