Overview
Notopterus notopterus is a large, air-breathing predator that usually feeds at night. Adult housing and maintenance demands exceed a typical home aquarium. Its dorsal fin and eventual size are more useful for identification than loose trade labels such as ghost knifefish.
Distribution & habitat
Traditional records span the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia, from Pakistan, India, Nepal, and Bangladesh through Myanmar and Indochina to Malaysia and Indonesia. This broad concept may include several closely related species, with boundaries still unresolved.
Habitats include lower river channels, tributaries, swamps, floodplains, lakes, and some artificial impoundments. Seasonally flooded forest is used for spawning.
Aquarium setup
Only public installations or exceptionally large specialist systems are appropriate. Use subdued lighting and substantial wood, rocks, or wide pipes for refuge. An inactive juvenile should not lead to underestimating adult space needs.
Very large mature filtration, high dissolved oxygen, and some circulation are essential. Weekly partial water changes of approximately 50–70% illustrate the required maintenance scale. Air breathing does not remove the need for good water quality.
Diet & feeding
This carnivore takes smaller fishes, crustaceans, and other invertebrates, predominantly at night. Most adapt to nonliving foods. Juveniles can take bloodworms, small earthworms, and chopped prawn, while adults accept fish strips, whole shrimp, mussel, and larger worms, including live river shrimp.
Pellets can supplement feeding but should not be the sole staple. Avoid routine beef heart, chicken, and similar terrestrial meats. Feeder fish can introduce parasites and disease and may be nutritionally unsuitable.
Behaviour & compatibility
It is relatively placid toward fish too large to swallow but may contest space with conspecifics or similarly shaped fishes, particularly when crowded. Solitary maintenance avoids conspecific disputes. Small fishes and shrimp are inappropriate companions.
Breeding
Aquarium reproduction is unrecorded. Wild individuals have been observed laying eggs among submerged plants in flooded forest during the wet season. That observation alone does not establish parental-care, incubation, or nursery details.
Notes
Adults are usually plain brown, whereas juveniles bear dark vertical bands. A small dorsal fin and larger adult size separate it from the often-confused Xenomystus nigri, which lacks that fin.
The family's joined anal and caudal fins create a long undulating edge. Uncertain population boundaries and confused sales names make careful identity checks particularly valuable.
