Overview

Nimbochromis venustus is a large fish-eating cichlid from Lake Malawi. Its irregular dark blotches explain giraffe-related trade names. It can wait motionless on the bottom for smaller prey, making it unsuitable for an ordinary community of small Malawi cichlids.

Distribution & habitat

Widespread in Lake Malawi, it uses relatively shallow shoreline water. Records include both rocky areas and soft sandy or muddy bottoms, so an aquarium should not consist solely of dense rockwork.

Aquarium setup

Begin with a footprint of around 120 × 45 cm or more. Rock piles can provide caves, but leave substantial open swimming space. Sand is preferable and also allows breeding males to excavate a spawning depression.

Diet & feeding

A specialized piscivore in nature, it usually accepts dead foods readily in captivity. Live fish are unnecessary. Offer suitable aquatic foods such as shrimp and manageable small marine fish, avoiding poultry and mammal meat. Predatory ability does not make every live-feeding practice appropriate.

Behaviour & compatibility

It is generally calm toward fish too large to swallow, but smaller mbuna and juveniles are prey. Males can fight strongly with one another, and wild fish are solitary. A single specimen is suitable for ordinary maintenance; breeding arrangements should use one male with several females rather than assuming a lasting pair bond.

Sexual dimorphism

Males tend to be larger with brighter blue and yellow pigmentation, which intensifies during reproductive condition.

Breeding

This maternal mouthbrooder is not especially easy to breed. Use a dedicated group of one male and three to six females, or raise six to eight juveniles before selecting adults. Provide flat rocks and open substrate, with suggested conditions of pH 8.0–8.5 and 25–27 °C.

The male selects a rock or digs a depression. The female lays successive batches, allowing fertilization before returning to gather each batch into her mouth. She may hold up to about 120 eggs for roughly three weeks without eating.

Stress readily causes premature release. Transfers need care, and prolonged absence may affect a female's rank on return. Avoid early movement unless harassment persists. Released fry immediately accept brine shrimp nauplii. Maternal protection continues for roughly another ten days, with young returning to her mouth when disturbed. Artificial early removal requires experience.

Notes

Giraffe Hap and Giraffe Cichlid describe its pattern rather than a different identity. Select companions by adult size, mouth size, and behavior instead of assuming that a shared lake guarantees compatibility.
