Overview

Neolamprologus brichardi offers a striking example of family brood care: older offspring help protect younger siblings. Adults are territorial breeding partners within a larger aggregation, rather than simply peaceful schooling fish.

Distribution & habitat

It is endemic to Lake Tanganyika. Populations with the characteristic head pattern mainly occupy the northern shores of Burundi, Tanzania, and DR Congo. Rocky habitats support many breeding pairs, which feed on plankton above the rocks.

Aquarium setup

Use sand and extensive rocky caves in hard alkaline water. A multigeneration family needs more floor space than a single pair, and rock barriers should interrupt sightlines between areas.

Diet & feeding

Wild fish mainly pick plankton from the water above rockwork. Captive fish accept a wide range of foods, with live and frozen items forming a substantial share. Include some spirulina or softened spinach alongside occasional dried foods.

Behaviour & compatibility

Territorial defense is persistent and strengthens when fry are present, making a species aquarium the easiest arrangement. In larger systems, compatible Tanganyikan fishes using other areas may work. Other rock dwellers need separate territories and visual barriers. Avoid related members of the species complex because they hybridize.

Sexual dimorphism

Sexing is difficult. Adult males are usually slightly larger, with longer dorsal and tail extensions.

Breeding

This relatively straightforward cave spawner can be started as at least six juveniles unless a bonded pair is available. Remove extras once a pair forms. Eggs are laid on the wall or roof of a concealed cave, often one the fish have excavated. The female tends them while the male guards nearby. Newly swimming fry accept Artemia nauplii but grow slowly.

Older young remain and help defend subsequent broods. Several generations can coexist when space permits. Crowding eventually reduces egg production or leads adults to consume the smallest young, so separate rearing is useful when raising large numbers.

Notes

Two dark gill-cover marks joining into a sideways T help distinguish this fish from similar relatives. Yellow fins alone are unreliable. Species boundaries remain debated; retain separate breeding lines and do not treat taxonomic uncertainty as a reason to mix them.
