English
Overview
Nemacheilus spiniferus is an uncommon stream loach from Borneo and nearby islands. Ten to thirteen irregular dark bars cross its flanks, and pointed scales occur on the caudal peduncle. It is peaceful with its own kind and suits groups of at least four in clean, oxygen-rich water with ample shelter.
Distribution & habitat
Records come from Sarawak, Brunei's upper Belait, parts of Indonesian Kalimantan, and the Natuna and Anambas islands. Bornean localities include the Kapuas and Malinau drainages.
Typical habitats are shallow forest streams with clear to lightly stained water over sand, gravel, small stones, and debris. Bankside vegetation is dense, and the water is often soft and acidic. Fast foothill streams over rock and gravel are also occupied.
Aquarium setup
Provide at least about 60 × 30 cm of floor space. Use sand, gravel, rounded rocks, and branches to create shaded crevices and interrupt sight lines; hardy attached plants can be added. High oxygen levels and some circulation are needed, but a torrent is unnecessary. Weekly changes of approximately 30–50 percent help prevent organic buildup while maintaining suitable soft, acidic conditions.
Diet & feeding
The genus generally feeds mainly on small insects, worms, crustaceans, and other zooplankton. Plant material is limited and partly derived from prey stomach contents. Supplement suitable dry foods with daily small live or frozen offerings such as water fleas, brine shrimp, and bloodworms.
Behaviour & compatibility
Keep at least four together. Peaceful open-water fishes with matching needs can provide reassurance. Suitable current-loving loaches and bottom-dwelling cyprinids are other possibilities. Some similar-looking loaches are strongly territorial and need much more space to coexist.
Sexual dimorphism
Males have a flap below the eye and develop tubercles on the first three pectoral rays at maturity. Females may be slightly larger and heavier-bodied.
Notes
The dark bars are usually only slightly broader than the pale spaces and are less regular than in some lookalikes. The pointed extension on a modified tail-base scale is approximately as long as the remainder of that scale. Combine such details with the body pattern for identification.
