鳗形条鳅

Overview

'Nemacheilus' anguilla has dark flank markings that merge partly or completely into a lateral stripe. This oxygen-loving stream loach is peaceful with its own species and is best maintained in groups of at least four with plenty of shelter.

Distribution & habitat

It is native to the Western Ghats of southwestern India, with records from river systems in Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Kerala. Typical habitats have moderate to fast current over gravel, cobbles, boulders, and exposed rock. Pollution, introduced species, and sand extraction have affected parts of its range.

Aquarium setup

Provide at least about 60 × 30 cm of floor space. Stones, sand, gravel, and branching wood should create shaded retreats and interrupt sight lines. Hardy plants can be attached to the structure. Maintain high oxygen levels and useful circulation without requiring a continuous torrent. Select filtration, circulation, or aeration to suit the aquarium, and change around 30–50 percent weekly to limit organic waste.

Diet & feeding

Loaches placed in this genus generally eat mainly small insects, worms, and crustaceans, with some plant material entering through prey stomach contents. In captivity, provide suitably sized dry foods plus daily small live or frozen offerings such as water fleas, brine shrimp, and bloodworms.

Behaviour & compatibility

Peaceful open-water fishes with matching environmental needs can reassure this retiring loach. Suitable current-loving loaches and bottom-dwelling cyprinids are other options. Similar-looking relatives may be much more territorial and should only be considered cautiously in larger setups.

Its own species is generally tolerated well. A group of four or more encourages natural activity.

Sexual dimorphism

Breeding males develop a bright red snout, red outer edges on both tail lobes, and darker overall markings. Females are paler with a distinctly swollen abdomen.

Breeding

Aquarium spawning and successful rearing have been reported. The male led courtship, and eggs apparently entered midwater near the filter outlet. No young survived in the community display, but some were raised after water and debris from the external filter were transferred to a separate container.

Free-swimming fry appeared after approximately six to seven days and initially received rotifers. A sudden temperature drop preceded spawning and may have contributed, but this individual observation does not establish cooling as a requirement.

Notes

Quotation marks around the genus reflect uncertainty over its placement. The nearly complete lateral line, reaching the anal fin region, and merging flank blotches help distinguish similar species.
