Overview

The small African characin Nannocharax brevis moves with distinctive pauses and short darting advances. Reliable supplies of tiny animal foods and clean water are central to care. Trade identifications are often uncertain, so examine both identity and feeding condition before purchase.

Distribution & habitat

It is restricted to parts of the Congo drainage in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Fast river and stream sections, with refuge among stones or bankside plants, are considered probable habitat by comparison with other members of the genus.

Aquarium setup

Dense planting with plenty of shade works well. Alternatively, build a stream layout using coarse gravel, rounded stones, and wood. A directed filter outlet can provide current while disturbing the surface for oxygen exchange. Tough attached plants such as Anubias and Bolbitis suit this arrangement.

Organic waste accumulation is poorly tolerated. Frequent small changes of around 10–20% help maintain clean, stable conditions.

Diet & feeding

Bottom-dwelling invertebrates dominate the natural diet. Small live or frozen bloodworms and Daphnia should form most aquarium meals because dry preparations are commonly refused. Check actual feeding rather than assuming that scattered pellets have been eaten.

Behaviour & compatibility

Choose peaceful, similarly sized companions that share its environmental requirements. Suitable characins, danios, hillstream loaches, and small loricariids are possibilities. Some territorial tendency is described, but groups can coexist where retreats are plentiful; watch how individuals use that space.

Breeding

Successful hobby breeding appears to be unreported.

Notes

Fish sold as this species or Nannocharax fasciatus may include additional identities. They also resemble South American Characidium. Scale texture and tail-base proportions provide clues, but the latter are unreliable in thin newly imported specimens. Similar shape alone does not establish origin or identification.
