Overview
Mystus mysticetus is a peaceful, social catfish suited to communities of larger placid fishes. Its eyes sit on the sides of the head. Adults may still swallow small companions, so a gentle disposition does not guarantee compatibility at every size.
Distribution & habitat
It inhabits rivers in Laos, Thailand, and Cambodia, entering flooded forest during the rains. Groups commonly gather near submerged logs, stones, and other objects.
Aquarium setup
Allow a footprint around 120 × 30 cm or larger. Supply hiding places, with wood providing cover reminiscent of its natural surroundings. Floating plants reduce light at the bottom and can encourage it to emerge. An elaborate decorative scheme is unnecessary.
Diet & feeding
Most suitably sized live, frozen, and dry foods are accepted without difficulty. Keep the menu varied instead of relying on a single item for long-term feeding.
Behaviour & compatibility
This bottom-dwelling fish fits a community of larger peaceful species. Suitably sized rasboras, barbs, labyrinth fishes, and placid cichlids are possible candidates. Adult predation on small fish remains a possibility, making size an important selection criterion.
A small group can be maintained when space permits. Wild fish reportedly associate with similar relatives in large feeding groups, but this does not imply that dense mixed groups belong in a small aquarium.
Sexual dimorphism
Males have a relatively long genital papilla just before the anal fin.
Notes
The laterally placed eyes are useful for distinguishing it from related fishes whose eyes sit farther toward the upper sides of the head. A general catfish appearance or trade label alone is insufficient for identification.
