Overview
Mystus bleekeri is a peaceful, social catfish that is usually more outgoing when kept with its own species. It suits communities of larger placid fishes, but adults may still consume small companions. Temperament does not remove the consequences of a size mismatch.
Distribution & habitat
Reported countries include India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar, and Indonesia. Lakes, rivers, and other waterways are occupied.
Aquarium setup
Allow a base around 120 × 30 cm or more. The decorative style is flexible, provided hiding places are available. Floating vegetation reduces light reaching the bottom and may encourage the fish to appear more often. It tolerates a relatively broad range of water chemistry.
Diet & feeding
Most live, frozen, and dry foods are accepted readily. Alternate suitable foods rather than depending on a single item.
Behaviour & compatibility
It serves as a bottom-dwelling member of a community of larger peaceful fishes. Keep a small group where space allows, since company encourages confidence. Adult predation on small fish is possible, so a peaceful label should not be interpreted as a guarantee of safety for tiny companions.
Sexual dimorphism
A small genital papilla immediately before the anal fin identifies males. It resembles an isolated fin ray.
Notes
It resembles a more frequently encountered relative but becomes larger and has a conspicuously longer adipose fin. Pay attention to that fin when assessing juveniles, rather than relying solely on color or a seller's name.
