Overview

Microsynodontis polli is a small, shy West African catfish that can be delicate on arrival. It lacks the conspicuous body bars of Microsynodontis batesii, although that name is sometimes applied to it in trade. Correct identification and a quiet acclimation environment are useful starting points.

Distribution & habitat

It is recorded from parts of the upper Niger basin in Liberia and Guinea. A river-basin name alone does not establish the exact local habitat, so detailed conditions should not be invented from geography.

Aquarium setup

Provide soft substrate and sheltered spaces among stones, wood, and twisted roots. Keep illumination subdued. Plants can add cover but are optional. Watch newly introduced individuals carefully and avoid companions that repeatedly force them from their retreats.

Diet & feeding

Frozen, live, and dry foods are accepted. This indicates flexibility in aquarium feeding rather than a fully established natural diet. Ensure that a shy fish actually obtains its ration when housed with companions.

Behaviour & compatibility

Most peaceful fishes can be considered, including suitable African tetras, dwarf cichlids, and small mormyrids. Aggressive or excessively vigorous species are poor choices. It does not normally fight with conspecifics, allowing group housing.

Sexual dimorphism

Mature females generally have rounder abdomens. Tail or body-bristle characters described for other species should not automatically be transferred to this one.

Notes

A rounded or only slightly forked tail helps distinguish this genus from some superficially similar catfishes with deeply forked tails. A “Nyong” sales label is not a species identification; shape and pattern need consideration alongside the name.
