Overview
A large open-swimming catfish, Micronema bleekeri is relatively peaceful toward suitable companions. Small fish are nevertheless prey, and strong jumping ability adds to its housing requirements. Space, secure cover, and filtration must all match the adult fish.
Distribution & habitat
It occurs in Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam across rivers, streams, lakes, and ponds. Wet-season movements into flooded areas are influenced by both water level and the lunar cycle.
Aquarium setup
At least 180 by 60 by 60 cm is the adult starting point, with more room preferable. Wide pipes can provide shelter while preserving open space. Plants may not withstand its movements. Heavy waste and sensitivity to poor water call for powerful filtration and disciplined water changes. A heavy close-fitting lid is essential.
Diet & feeding
It accepts a broad range of live, frozen, and prepared foods. Larger fish can be offered earthworms, suitable prawn or mussel pieces, and pellets.
Behaviour & compatibility
Use only companions too large to swallow. Peaceful behavior does not protect small fish, and any large-fish community needs correspondingly spacious accommodation.
Sexual dimorphism
Males have a serrated pectoral-spine edge absent in females. Mature females are fuller-bodied.
Notes
Irregular imports and resemblance to related species make identity and eventual size worth checking before purchase.
