Overview

Mesonoemacheilus guentheri is a Western Ghats loach with rows of pale yellow, dark-edged round spots. Aquarium reports range from peaceful behavior to pronounced territorial aggression, so compatibility needs individual assessment.

Distribution & habitat

It was described from rapids on the Nilgiri Hills in Tamil Nadu, southern India, and has subsequently been recorded farther south in Kerala's Cardamom Hills. Color and markings vary both between and within populations.

Habitats are clear, oxygenated headwater streams and small rivers, often shaded by forest. Coarse sand, gravel, and large stones form the bottom, with algae and microorganisms growing on exposed surfaces. Monsoon conditions markedly increase flow and turbidity.

Aquarium setup

Provide at least about 60 × 30 cm of floor space. Stones, sand, gravel, and branching wood should create numerous shaded crevices and interrupted sight lines. Hardy plants may be attached to the structure. Maintain high oxygen levels and useful circulation without needing torrential flow. Weekly changes of around 30–50 percent help prevent organic waste accumulation.

Diet & feeding

Members of this genus are omnivorous, eating predominantly small insects, worms, crustaceans, and other zooplankton, with a smaller plant component. Offer appropriately sized dry food alongside daily small live or frozen items such as water fleas, brine shrimp, and bloodworms.

Behaviour & compatibility

The reasons for contrasting aggression reports remain unresolved; population, sex, and environment may contribute. Robust open-water fishes with matching environmental needs are the better candidates. Avoid tiny or delicate companions, especially in shallow aquariums where persistent chasing may leave little refuge.

Very placid bottom dwellers and similarly shaped loaches are poor choices. Suitable current-loving fishes still require observation. Groups of at least four are recommended because the species normally tolerates its own kind, although extreme territorial behavior can occur.

Sexual dimorphism

Males have a small flap below the eye and may develop thickened pectoral rays bearing rows of tubercles. Females may grow slightly larger and develop a rounder abdomen when carrying eggs.

Notes

Round rather than forked spots, a relatively long caudal peduncle with a dark band, and an anal fin that does not reach the tail base help identify this loach. Mixed shipments can contain similar species.
