概述

Melanotaenia splendida inornata

Overview

An active Australian rainbowfish, Melanotaenia splendida inornata is peaceful but needs swimming space. Young fish offered for sale often look subdued, and full adult coloration can take more than a year even with good feeding.

Distribution & habitat

It occurs in Australia across swamps, lagoons, streams, and rivers. Vegetation, submerged logs, and similar debris provide cover. Many habitats undergo seasonal shifts in temperature and water level.

Aquarium setup

Combine dense planted areas with broad open swimming lanes. Slow to moderate water movement is suitable. The planted setting should provide refuge without filling all the space this active fish needs.

Diet & feeding

It accepts a wide range of suitable dry, frozen, and live foods. Regular live-food offerings help bring out its coloration, so avoid limiting feeding to a single dry preparation.

Behaviour & compatibility

A group of at least six to eight, preferably more, reduces nervousness and encourages male displays. Increase swimming room as the group grows.

Despite a peaceful disposition, rapid movement and adult size can disturb small or slow neighbors. Comparable rainbowfishes, characins, danios, barbs, freshwater gobies, and suitable cory catfish are candidates. Avoid mixing closely related forms that may hybridize.

Sexual dimorphism

Mature males are larger and brighter, becoming substantially deeper-bodied as they grow. Their dorsal and anal fins also lengthen. Females retain a more slender, subdued appearance.

Breeding

It scatters eggs and generally spawns readily; raising the tiny young is more demanding. A bare-bottom breeding tank can contain fine plants or spawning mops, gentle air-powered filtration, and slightly hard alkaline water. Condition adults together on live and frozen foods, then select a full female and a well-colored male. A modest temperature increase may encourage spawning.

Daily batches can continue for weeks, with eggs held to surfaces by fine threads. Adults tend to eat them, so inspect the spawning material regularly and transfer eggs to a separate nursery filled with breeding-tank water. Hatching takes about 7–10 days depending on temperature. Begin with infusoria-sized food, progressing after roughly a week to swimming prey such as Artemia nauplii. Sinking food misses the surface-oriented fry.

Notes

Color, markings, and fin characters vary among local populations and related subspecies. Preserve locality information and keep distinct forms separate to reduce hybridization and identification problems.
