Overview
The nocturnal Tanganyikan predator Mastacembelus ellipsifer spends much of its time buried in sand. Subdued lighting encourages visibility, while soft substrate and suitable hard alkaline water underpin long-term care.
Distribution & habitat
It is endemic to Lake Tanganyika, especially the shoreline transition between rocky areas and sandier bottoms.
Aquarium setup
An aquarium around 120 × 45 × 45 cm can be used, emphasizing width over height. Rock piles provide retreats, and sand is essential for burial. Sharp gravel risks skin abrasions.
Avoid excessive current. Dim conditions suit its nocturnal habits and make observation easier. Usable bottom area matters more than compensating with extra tank height.
Diet & feeding
It preys on smaller fishes in nature and generally accepts nonliving alternatives readily in aquariums. Offer shrimp, clams, mussels, earthworms, and bloodworms in rotation.
Behaviour & compatibility
Fishes too large to swallow are usually tolerated. Its hard alkaline requirements favor an appropriately stocked Tanganyikan community with companions outside its prey size.
Conspecific territoriality means multiple fish require larger quarters and abundant cover.
Breeding
Successful hobby breeding has not been recorded.
Notes
Handle carefully around the hardened dorsal rays. Lack of a swim bladder is associated with the family's bottom-living habits, while this species has connected dorsal, caudal, and anal fins.
