English
Overview
Macropodus hongkongensis is a southern Chinese labyrinth fish that breeds in bubble nests. Males defend territories, especially during reproduction, so small adult size does not make cramped multi-male housing suitable. A forked tail, conspicuous brown gill-cover spot, and predorsal saddle marks help identification.
Distribution & habitat
Records come from Hong Kong, Guangdong, and Fujian, with the type locality at Sha Lo Tung in Tai Po. Tai Po and Sai Kung are documented Hong Kong areas, and some earlier localities have suffered destruction.
It occurs in hill streams and lowland settings, including agricultural habitats, apparently favoring shallow, densely vegetated, slow-moving water. Shelter and escape routes matter more than simply reproducing shallow depth.
Aquarium setup
Allow at least about 80 × 30 cm of floor space for a pair. Wood and branches create shade, while a bare bottom can simplify breeding maintenance. Surface plants support nests; dried leaves add shelter and microorganisms useful to young fish.
Diet & feeding
Insect larvae and similar animals are probable natural prey. Offer small live or frozen Daphnia, brine shrimp, white worms, and Grindal worms. Some fish also accept quality dry foods.
Behaviour & compatibility
Avoid similarly shaped companions. Peaceful schooling fish with matching conditions are possible alternatives. Multiple males require a very large aquarium. Two or more females per male help distribute attention, but pursued fish still need refuges.
Sexual dimorphism
Males become larger and develop extended dorsal, anal, and tail-fin rays. Females pale near spawning.
Breeding
The male nests among floating plants. Soft water and modest warming within the suitable range are reported triggers. A close-fitting cover preserves the warm humid air required for normal development of the fry's labyrinth organ.
Females are generally tolerated during construction. Once the nest is ready, fin displays precede spawning embraces beneath it. Oil-bearing eggs float upward, often with male assistance, and several hundred may be produced. Adults can usually remain afterward; females sometimes defend the surrounding area, but male tolerance has limits.
Larvae remain in the nest through yolk absorption. Care declines after free swimming, and adults normally leave young uneaten. Supply microscopic foods initially, followed by microworms and brine shrimp nauplii. Make regular small water changes.
Notes
Dark crown spots, three to five brown predorsal saddles, a whitish tip on the extended leading pelvic ray, and reddish dorsal and tail markings form a useful combination. Color alone is insufficient for confident identification.
