Overview
Lugubria strigata is a large pike cichlid reaching approximately 40 cm. Juveniles can conceal the scale of the eventual commitment, while conspecific aggression and the risk to small companions make it a fish for a prepared large-aquarium setting.
Distribution & habitat
Distribution records list Brazil and Guyana and associate the species with the lower Amazon region rather than the main Amazon channel itself.
Aquarium setup
A tank around 180 × 60 × 90 cm provides a large-system reference. Use sand and rock caves for retreat. Excavation and rearrangement of furnishings are possible. Any plants should be robust, preferably potted or attached to wood. Plan the permanent arrangement around adult requirements.
Diet & feeding
Offer a varied menu of quality cichlid pellets or flakes, live or frozen bloodworm and brine shrimp, prawns and mussels, and spirulina- or algae-containing preparations.
Behaviour & compatibility
Aggression can occur, particularly toward members of the same species. A dedicated aquarium is an option. Other large cichlids should only be considered when space and individual interactions permit. Its large mouth makes smaller fishes vulnerable; being larger than a typical tiny community fish may still be insufficient protection.
Sexual dimorphism
A pink belly is a useful female characteristic to observe.
Notes
Susceptibility to hole-in-the-head problems has been reported, but species identity alone is not a diagnosis or treatment guide. Practical preparation starts with sufficient permanent space and continued observation of condition and feeding.
