Overview
Leptodoras linnelli is a peaceful schooling thorny catfish from northern South America. It favors cooler conditions than many relatives and is seldom imported deliberately, often appearing among shipments of other catfishes.
Distribution & habitat
Records include Venezuela's Casiquiare and upper Orinoco, Guyana's Essequibo and Demerara, and several northern Brazilian rivers. Deep, flowing reaches with sandy bottoms are typical, with little light reaching the riverbed.
Aquarium setup
An adult needs accommodation of at least approximately 120 × 45 × 45 cm. Fine sand with a few rounded stones or wood branches creates a simple layout. Keep lighting subdued; floating plants can provide shade.
Strong filtration should maintain clean water and a lengthwise current. Deteriorating water quality is poorly tolerated. Maintain about 18–22 °C rather than automatically applying the warmer conditions used for many tropical thorny catfishes.
Diet & feeding
Catfish pellets, algae wafers, and granular foods are accepted, alongside a substantial contribution from live and frozen foods. During acclimation it commonly feeds after dark, so offer food shortly before lights go out. This initial pattern should not be assumed to describe all settled individuals.
Behaviour & compatibility
It is nonaggressive, although very small companions remain vulnerable to ingestion. Slightly larger peaceful South American fishes with similar requirements for moving water are possible partners, including suitable armored catfishes and placid cichlids. Conspecific company suits its schooling nature, with group size limited by available accommodation.
Sexual dimorphism
Reliable differences remain unconfirmed. A broader mature female body is a possible clue rather than an established diagnostic character.
Notes
Aquarium breeding records are lacking. Identification involves the ridge ahead of the adipose fin, plate counts, fin shape, and pectoral-spine structure. A slender outline alone is insufficient, and related species share some of these features.
