Overview

Leptobotia rubrilabris is a river loach from China's Yangtze system. Aquarium fish sold under this name are often Sinibotia pulchra or other relatives; the true species may never have been exported for the hobby. Establishing identity is therefore an essential first step.

Distribution & habitat

Its native range covers the middle and upper Yangtze, with most records from Sichuan and Hunan. Similar fish from northern Vietnam's Lo drainage remain unidentified.

Clear, well-oxygenated running water over rocks or gravel is favored. It occurs in boulder-rich headwaters as well as larger, turbid channels. Fish may occupy impoundments following dam construction, but breeding there is considered unlikely. Dams, pollution, and habitat loss have altered its natural river environment.

Aquarium setup

Provide a footprint of at least approximately 120 × 45 cm. Use mixed rocks, gravel, and smooth boulders in a flowing-stream layout. Roots and branches create shaded areas, with pipes supplying extra retreats. Robust attached plants can be placed on the decorations.

Established filtration, ample circulation, and a high oxygen supply are important. Keep conditions stable and clean, preventing organic waste buildup. Long-term temperatures around 15.5–21 °C are suitable; summer cooling may be necessary in warm climates.

Diet & feeding

Bottom-oriented predation on insects, crustaceans, and small fishes is likely in nature but not confirmed as a complete feeding account. In captivity, offer varied live or frozen bloodworms, Tubifex, chopped shellfish, and earthworms alongside quality sinking foods.

Behaviour & compatibility

Strong aggression is not expected, although much smaller companions may be disturbed by its size and activity. Avoid slow-moving or long-finned fishes. Peaceful, robust open-water species of compatible size are better candidates. Evaluate other loaches and catfishes for temperature, flow, and space requirements.

Social interaction and hierarchies characterize Leptobotia, so at least three or four are recommended. Isolated fish may withdraw or attack similarly shaped tankmates. With only two or three, dominant individuals can suppress weaker fish until feeding stops. These genus-level observations guide group planning without resolving every aspect of this species' behavior.

Sexual dimorphism

Mature females may be fuller-bodied, but reliable external differences have not been confirmed.

Breeding

Aquarium breeding has not been recorded.

Notes

The short, unbranched spines below the eyes of Leptobotia can be erected from their skin folds when fish are stressed. Handle carefully to avoid net entanglement or injury. Persistent wasting deserves investigation rather than a diagnosis based solely on body shape.
