Overview

Trade names such as royal clown loach can confuse Leptobotia pellegrini with the much larger Leptobotia elongata. Correct identification matters when planning adult accommodation. This species is comparatively slender and has a darker head.

Distribution & habitat

Records are from Sichuan and parts of the Pearl drainage in Guangxi, China. The Sichuan locality is presumed to fall within the upper Yangtze, rather than being precisely established. Similar fish reported from northern Vietnam's Lo River remain unidentified and do not confirm a Vietnamese population.

Detailed habitat use is uncertain. Clean, oxygenated flowing water over rocks and gravel is plausible, but records of other Leptobotia in streams and larger channels cannot all be transferred to this species.

Aquarium setup

Use a footprint of at least around 120 × 45 cm. Mixed rocks, gravel, and smooth boulders can form a stream-style layout. Roots and branches create shade, and pipes provide retreats. Most plants struggle with this arrangement, although robust attached plants can be grown on wood or stone.

Provide substantial circulation and oxygenation while maintaining clean, stable water without organic buildup. Introduce fish only into a fully matured system. Keep long-term temperatures around 20–24 °C; temporary warmth requires particular attention to oxygen and should not become the permanent regime.

Diet & feeding

Predation on bottom-dwelling insects, crustaceans, and small fishes is suggested rather than confirmed in nature. In captivity, alternate live or frozen bloodworms, Tubifex, chopped shellfish, and earthworms with quality sinking prepared foods.

Behaviour & compatibility

Marked aggression is not expected, although small companions may be intimidated by its size and activity. Avoid slow-moving and long-finned fishes. Peaceful but robust open-water fishes of suitable size are better candidates. Check temperature, current, adult size, and space requirements for any proposed bottom-dwelling companions.

Social interaction and hierarchies occur in the genus, supporting a group of at least three or four. Solitary fish may withdraw or attack similarly shaped tankmates, while pairs and trios can allow persistent domination that stops weaker fish feeding. These are genus-level observations rather than a complete behavioral description of this species.

Sexual dimorphism

Mature females may become fuller-bodied, but this difference is unconfirmed and abdominal shape alone is not a dependable sexing method.

Notes

Shared trade names conceal the substantial adult-size difference between this fish and L. elongata. Confirm the scientific identity before deciding whether housing is adequate.

Spines beneath the eyes in Leptobotia can rise when a fish is stressed and may snag nets or injure hands. Investigate persistent wasting without assigning a specific pathogen from appearance alone.
