Overview
Tiny eyes and reduced pigmentation in some individuals distinguish Leptobotia microphthalma. It remains uncommon in aquarium keeping. These features suggest deep-water or possibly subterranean habits, but neither possibility is confirmed.
Distribution & habitat
Known records are from the upper Yangtze system in China, including the Min River in Sichuan and the Jialing in Gansu. Clear, oxygenated river habitats are plausible by comparison with relatives, but its actual depth, current preferences, and substrate use remain uncertain. Deep-water and underground associations should likewise be treated as hypotheses.
Aquarium setup
Provide a footprint of at least about 120 × 45 cm. A stream-style arrangement can combine rocks of different sizes, gravel, and smooth boulders. Woody roots and branches add shaded areas, while pipes offer retreats. Robust attached plants may be grown on the decorations.
Use fully established filtration, ample circulation, and a high oxygen supply. Maintain stable, clean water without organic waste buildup. Long-term temperatures should remain around 15.5–21 °C, with cooling potentially required in hot weather. Reported short-term extremes are not appropriate permanent conditions.
Diet & feeding
A diet of insects, crustaceans, and small fishes taken near the bottom is plausible in nature, but its natural feeding ecology is not confirmed. In captivity, vary live or frozen bloodworms and Tubifex with chopped shellfish, earthworms, and quality sinking foods.
Behaviour & compatibility
It is expected to be relatively nonaggressive, although markedly smaller fishes may be intimidated by its activity. Avoid slow-moving and long-finned companions. Peaceful but robust open-water fishes of compatible size are better candidates. Check temperature, flow, and space requirements before adding other loaches or catfishes.
Social interaction and hierarchies occur in Leptobotia, so a group of at least three or four is advised. Isolated fish may withdraw or attack similar-looking tankmates; very small groups may also allow a dominant fish to suppress others until feeding stops. These genus-level observations do not amount to a complete behavioral account of this species.
Sexual dimorphism
Mature females may be fuller-bodied, but a dependable external sexing method is not established.
Breeding
Aquarium reproduction has not been recorded.
Notes
Compared with the similar Leptobotia tientainensis, it generally has a deeper tail fork, smaller eyes, different tail markings, and no yellow spot before the dorsal fin. Eye size varies substantially within the species, so a single eye-to-head ratio is insufficient for identification.
Movable spines beneath the eyes in Leptobotia can catch in nets or injure hands. Persistent wasting should prompt investigation rather than an automatic diagnosis of a particular infection.
