Overview
Leporinus copelandii is a substantial anostomid from southeastern Brazil. Adequate space, oxygenation, and clean biologically mature water are the main priorities. A simple display can work, but the size of newly acquired juveniles should not determine the permanent aquarium.
Distribution & habitat
Records involve the Paraíba do Sul, Doce, São Mateus, and Jequitinhonha systems across several southeastern Brazilian states. Original material came from multiple localities, so no single listed river represents its only source.
Aquarium setup
Allow at least about 180 × 60 cm of floor space. Swimming room and oxygen supply matter more than elaborate decoration. Sand, modest leaf litter, large wood, twisted roots, and some floating plants provide a natural arrangement.
Stable water quality is fundamental. Introduce fish only after biological filtration is mature. Strong jumping is characteristic of the family, so use a closely fitting cover and prevent escape gaps around equipment.
Diet & feeding
Members of the genus commonly forage near the bottom for algae, invertebrates, and organic detritus. Aquarium fish are generally accepting of food, but a protein-heavy menu is inappropriate. Offer variety reflecting these food categories instead of interpreting an eager feeding response as a reason for continuous rich animal food.
Notes
Jaw and tooth form vary substantially within the family, so similar body shapes do not establish identical diets. Relationships within the historical genus are complex, with some former members reassigned elsewhere. Preserve the complete scientific name and locality when checking labels.
