Overview
A large established aquarium is required for Leporinus brunneus, a South American anostomid recorded from Amazonian and Orinoco waters. Long-term space and stable water quality should be secured before decorative details are considered.
Distribution & habitat
Known records include Brazil's Madeira and Negro, the Orinoco in Venezuela and Colombia, and the Casiquiare connection between the Negro and Orinoco systems. The type locality lies around Cachoeira Camanaos on the Negro in Amazonas, Brazil.
Aquarium setup
Allow at least approximately 210 × 60 cm of floor space. Decoration is flexible: sand, some fallen leaves, substantial branches, and twisted roots can create a natural layout. Floating plants offer cover, provided open space remains available.
Water stability is essential, excluding newly established aquariums with immature biological filtration. Fit the cover securely, since jumping is characteristic of the family.
Diet & feeding
The genus-level natural diet commonly includes bottom-associated algae, small invertebrates, and organic debris. This broad account should not imply a separately verified menu for every species.
Captive fish generally accept varied aquarium foods. Avoid making very high-protein products the mainstay.
Notes
The species name means brown. Relationships within the diverse genus have been reassessed, with some former members transferred elsewhere. Historical genus labels and broad headstander common names do not replace identification or provide enough information to assume compatibility.
