概述

L264(Leporacanthicus joselimai)

Overview

The L264 pleco, Leporacanthicus joselimai, needs oxygen-rich moving water. Its striking juvenile white fin tips fade with growth and may disappear completely, a change that should not automatically be interpreted as declining health.

Distribution & habitat

It comes from Brazil's Tapajós River, using rocks and tangled wood in rapids and other fast-flowing reaches.

Aquarium setup

Provide spacious quarters with sand, substantial wood, and smooth stones forming shaded crevices. Subdued lighting is useful. Maintain high dissolved oxygen and movement, adding circulation or aeration as required.

Waste production is considerable, so effective filtration and water maintenance are essential alongside flow.

Diet & feeding

Animal foods are preferred: live or frozen bloodworms, chopped mussels, and shrimp flesh can accompany sinking preparations. Algae and other plant material are taken less often, though cucumber or zucchini may occasionally be nibbled. Vegetables should not become the main ration.

Behaviour & compatibility

Suitable characins, peaceful cichlids, and appropriate smaller catfishes are possible companions. Strongly flowing aquaria narrow those choices, making individual assessment important.

Territoriality toward conspecifics is especially marked between males. Groups require sufficient space and several separated potential territories, not simply another cave entrance in crowded quarters.

Sexual dimorphism

Mature males have longer, wider heads, larger dorsal fins, and more extensive odontodes. Comparing fish from above is useful.

Breeding

Captive reproduction has occurred, and it is a cave spawner. Detailed methods are limited, so established routines for another genus should not be presented as verified for this fish.

Notes

The enlarged upper-jaw teeth explain vampire trade names. They may help grip snails or other invertebrates, but their exact function remains unclear, as does the small bony projection on the head.

White fin tips are strongest in juveniles and can vanish in adults. When selecting fish, abdominal fullness and the absence of sunken eyes matter more than retaining juvenile fin color.
