Overview
From fast-flowing Xingu waters, Leporacanthicus heterodon is usually peaceful with appropriate fishes occupying other levels but territorial with bottom competitors. Oxygenation, filtration, and floor space deserve more attention than a quiet juvenile appearance.
Distribution & habitat
It occurs in Brazil's Xingu basin, inhabiting rapids and other swift-water reaches.
Aquarium setup
Use spacious quarters, preferably with sand, large wood pieces, and smooth stones forming caves and shaded recesses. Subdued lighting is beneficial.
Provide highly oxygenated water and movement, supplemented by circulation pumps or large airstones if needed. Efficient filtration and maintenance must accommodate substantial waste production.
Diet & feeding
Plant material is not its principal preference. It accepts sinking preparations and animal foods including earthworms, shrimp flesh, mussels, and bloodworms, and also enjoys snails. It should not be fed as though every pleco lived on algae alone.
Behaviour & compatibility
Suitable fishes occupying other water layers are generally tolerated. Match companions for size and moving-water requirements.
Other bottom dwellers, especially similarly patterned ones, can provoke territorial competition. Keeping a group requires very roomy quarters rather than crowding several similar plecos into limited floor space.
Sexual dimorphism
Mature males have longer and broader heads from above, larger dorsal fins, and more numerous odontodes than females.
Breeding
No confirmed practical captive method is available. Cave-breeding procedures of relatives should not be assumed verified for this species.
Notes
The vampire name refers to the two enlarged upper-jaw teeth, not blood feeding. Their possible role in gripping snails or other invertebrates remains incompletely understood.
Check abdominal fullness and look for sunken eyes when choosing fish, since obvious emaciation should not be overlooked.
