Overview

Lepidocephalichthys sp. 'LE1', sometimes sold as the Vietnamese marbled hog-faced loach, has no confirmed species identification. Fine sand, companions of its own kind, and a quiet aquarium are the main practical requirements; a trade label does not establish its identity as a described relative.

Distribution & habitat

Vietnam is the recorded country of origin. Collection near Da Nang in central Vietnam has been suggested but remains unconfirmed. Its actual habitat is unknown. Relatives commonly occupy shallow slow channels, swamps, oxbows, backwaters, and rice fields with mud, sediment, submerged roots, or leaves, sometimes changing substantially with the seasons. This is comparative guidance for the aquarium.

Aquarium setup

Provide a footprint of at least about 45 × 30 cm and soft fine sand. Fish spend time buried, sometimes showing only their eyes. Coarse gravel risks injury and stress and may interfere with feeding. Place smooth stones, wood, and roots securely before adding substrate so digging cannot undermine them.

Subdued light, modest leaf litter, and several shaded refuges suit the display. Use gentle circulation with adequate oxygenation. Shield filter intakes from small fish and fit a secure lid.

Diet & feeding

Members of the genus generally sift substrate for insect larvae, small crustaceans, and similar prey. Offer suitably small sinking dry food together with regular live or frozen Daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworms. Check that hidden fish actually receive food.

Behaviour & compatibility

Keep at least four conspecifics. The genus is generally peaceful, and calm small fish using the upper water under similar conditions can reduce nervousness. Assess other loaches for aggression and territorial behavior before mixing them. Possible egg or fry predation by relatives makes a separate breeding setup prudent.

Sexual dimorphism

Mature males have enlarged pectoral fins, with the seventh and eighth rays thickened and fused into a plate. Females usually grow larger and appear fuller-bodied.

Notes

Labels such as Lepidocephalichthys cf. hasselti and Lepidocephalus cf. thermalis have been used, but the fish may be undescribed. LE1 remains a provisional designation. Movable spines beneath the eyes can catch in nets when the fish is stressed.
